The Grange, Prince Edward
| Vineyard, Winery & Events Venue
“The oldest vineyard in the County is probably 25 years old, so we’re constantly discovering. We’re also growing grapes on the knife’s edge in terms of what can ripen, so the attention to detail has to be so high. There’s constant innovation. I think that kind of growing produces wines that have energy and are exciting to drink.”
— Jonas Newman, Winemaker at The Grange Tweet
ABOUT THE GRANGE OF PRINCE EDWARD WINERY…
Founded in 2002, The Grange of Prince Edward Winery (“Grange” or “The Grange”) is one of the longest-running wineries and most established hospitality destinations in Prince Edward County. Spanning 135 acres in Hillier, Ontario, Canada, the Grange encompasses some of the most significant vineyard plantings in the region, with over 40 acres under vine planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Cabernet Franc.
In addition to producing low-intervention, terroir-driven wines, The Grange offers a comprehensive culinary program focused on local farm-to-table ingredients.
The property’s historic 200-year-old barn and grounds also play host to wine tastings, a boutique, and bespoke experiences including private dinners, weddings and events. Under the new leadership of one of the original partners since 2021, The Grange’s expert production team of viticulturist and winemaker have been hard at work on an extensive rejuvenation of the vineyards and overhaul of the winemaking program and cellars.
Viticulturist Mike Peddlesden has been an instrumental figure in the Prince Edward County region’s wine history for decades. His planting of PEC’s first commercial vineyard, Peddlesden Wines (now Casa-Dea), in the late 90s helped lead the charge for the current viniculture boom in the area. After joining The Grange from 2002 to 2010, Peddlesden tended and managed vineyards at Sandbanks and Rosehall Run, but returned to The Grange in 2021 to oversee the vineyard’s impending overhaul.
Grange Winemaker Jonas Newman was drawn to the winemaking scene in PEC in part by Peddlesden’s work. With his wife Vicki Samaras, Newman founded Hinterland, a sparkling-focused winery, in 2010, and slowly grew his profile as a winemaker in the region. Newman joined The Grange in 2022 to helm the winemaking program.
Marlise Ponzo, The Grange’s Sommelier and Sales Manager, has over 20 years of experience in the service industry, with a resume that spans from cozy wine bars to some of Toronto’s biggest entertainment juggernauts. After honing her knowledge at Crush Wine Bar and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Ponzo—who has nurtured a close connection with the County—took over sommelier duties at The Grange and helps guests plan the bespoke events of their dreams.
